Volunteers are the Backbone of the Somerset Medical Center Foundation

WINNER: Challenge Winner

Robert (Bob) Craig is the “Ultimate Volunteer.”

Since retiring from Western Electric / AT&T, Bob Craig has found the time and energy to participate and lead others in a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Since 2001, Bob has volunteered two days a week at Somerset Medical Center (SMC) in Somerville, NJ. He also served on the SMC In-patient Satisfaction Committee and the Volunteer Advisory Committee. He often assists with a SMC’s SAIL (Senior Advantage In Life) program. He is also active in the hospital foundation’s fund raising events, since 2007 at the “Music at Moorland” and “Far Hills Races” events, and since 2009, at the “SMC Foundation Golf Classic”.

Bob’s unselfish leadership has helped SMC’s Volunteer program and Foundation to become the envy of other hospitals in New Jersey. In recognition of his contributions, he was given the hospital’s Alex Nilo Volunteer of the Year Award in 2009.

Bob Craig’s generosity doesn’t end at the medical center. At St. Bernard of Clairvaux parish, he drives a truck and serves food to the needy for their SHIP (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program); serves with the Bereavement Group; coordinates scheduling of the overnight hosts for the IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network), which provides shelter for the homeless; and is a member of a fund-raising committee that manages the “St. Bernard Golf Classic.”

Since 2004, Bob has been a member of the group “Men Mentoring Men” (MMM) and served as a member of the Somerville Chapter’s Board of Directors for three years. As Community Events Chairman for MMM, he coordinated and participated in the building of three homes for the Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity and coordinated the cleanup of a one mile section of road as part of the Somerset County Adopt-A-Road program.

Since 2005, as part of a program sponsored by the Branchburg Rotary, Bob has been mentoring four children at the Stony Brook Elementary School.

Bob seems to look for opportunities to share his time to help others in their time of need. Without ever being asked, Bob frequently offers and provides rides to and from Newark Airport or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Bob inspires others to look for the opportunity to give with no strings attached. He is the “Ultimate Volunteer.”
